Lack of sleep produces strange results. I didn't set out to do either of these pieces, but here they are. Is there a theme here? I think so, but I don't think it's the obvious. Not the blood, or implication of violence, but rather, the hollowness. Both subjects are empty. That seems to be popping up in my work a lot lately.

I did both of these pieces strictly digitally. It's hard for me to accept them as 'legitimate' art, as such, I think. Maybe because I didn't get my hands dirty, it doesn't deserve to be considered as such? I don't know if that's it exactly, but it's got a good beat and you can dance to it.

I love video games. I've played them for as long as I can remember, and despite what your cable news networks might like you to believe, I think it's made me a better person. A million different titles from a thousand different studios from a hundred different countries mean that a lot of ideas get thrown on the collective table. They have inspired me, and in doing so, have made me a better artist.

Three days ago, I tasked myself with proving it with the following criteria;

1. List your favorite childhood, 16-bit era games.

2. Narrow the list to six (a well rounded number).

3. Interpret the games on the list artistically and uniquely.

4. Do not repeat artistic styles between the six pieces.

The results are as follow. Good, bad, ugly.

The theme on this one was madness, so I made use of skewed perspective, cramped layering, and an excess amount of negative space to more or less make the piece deliberately unattractive or unsettling to look at. I think it came through with decent enough results. To anyone who reads this, Arkham Asylum drops tomorrow. Pick it up. Reviews have been through the roof.

Modern Gods: Ares - God of Wars

What happened to the old gods, those of myth and legend? Those that threw thunder from their fingertips, and commanded the very gates of hell?
What if they never left?

Such is the concept for MODERN GODS, a project I'd like to work long-form on. Basically, it's a drastic reinterpretation of the Greco-Roman myths and legends seen through the window of modern times.

First up is ARES - GOD OF WARS.

The concept here was to not make him just a god of war, but personification of war itself. War can be used for noble causes in some case, but the end result is always the same; death and dismemberment on the battlefield. As such, Ares is in a constant state of injury related to horrific battlefield combat. From the trench warfare of World War I, to IED's along a gray ribbon of desert highway, his body carries the scars of what the hatred of man can wrought. As for the new plural state of his title, well, he's been busy for the past three thousand years. His clothing showcases a particular interest in the past century. From Gestapo leather, to Vietnam Ear Trophies, to a battered purple heart, Ares acts as a walking shrine to the bloody campaigns that have changed our society.
